동국대 불교학술원은 2015년부터 밀양 표충사에서 소장하고 있는 약 2,700여 종의 고문서를 조사하였다. 이 과정에서 소중한 자료들이 다수 발굴되었으며, 2017년 그 성과의 일부를 엮어 󰡔밀양 표충사 시첩󰡕과 󰡔밀양 표충사 서간첩󰡕이라는 두 권의 자료집을 발간하였다. 특히 ‘간독簡牘’이라는 이름의 서간첩 6권은 지금까지 전혀 공개된 적이 없는 신자료라는 점에서 많은 관심을 받은 바 있다.
‘간독’은 태허 남붕이 받은 총 231통의 편지가 수록되어 있는 자료이다. 남붕은 표충사表忠祠 건립 과정에서 결정적 역할을 하였으며, 󰡔분충서난록奮忠紓難錄󰡕의 간행을 주도했던 인물이기도 하다. 사명대사의 업적과 역사적 공훈은 그로 인해 비로소 조선사회에 널리 알려질 수 있게 되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 정작 남붕의 행장行狀 자료조차 전하는 내용이 없어 아직 남붕에 관계된 학계의 이해는 초보적 수준을 벗어나지 못하는 실정이다.
이 논문은 새롭게 발견된 ‘간독’ 6권의 내용을 소개하고, 이 자료에 담긴 주요 내용들을 살펴보기 위한 목적을 지니고 작성되었다. 이를 위해 제Ⅱ장에서는 이 자료 전반에 대한 해제解題 형식의 글을 수록하였으며, 제Ⅲ장에서는 서간집의 주인공인 남붕의 행적과 관계된 내용을 중점적으로 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 통해 남붕의 주요 행적이라든가 그가 중점적으로 교류했던 인사들과의 관계 등을 상당 부분 밝혀낼 수 있었다.
끝으로 제Ⅳ장에서는 ‘간독’에 실려 있는 사명대사 관련 자료를 소개하고, 이를 통해 사명대사의 역사적 위상을 단편적으로나마 살펴보고자 하였다. 최근 사명대사에 대한 동시대, 혹은 후대의 인식 문제를 다루는 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. ‘간독’에 실린 내용은 향후 사명대사 관련 연구에 있어 보다 적극적으로 활용될 필요가 있을 것이다. 이 논문을 계기로 남붕과 표충사, 그리고 사명대사 관련 연구가 보다 활발하게 진행될 수 있기를 기대해 본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Since 2015, Dongguk University’s Academy of Buddhist Studies has investigated about 2,700 ancient documents owned by Pyochungsa Temple in Miryang. Their investigation unearthed many valuable resources, and part of the Academy’s achievement was published in 2017 into two books: Poetry Collection of Pyochungsa Temple in Miryang, and Letter Collection of Pyochungsa Temple(表忠祠) in Miryang. In particular, the Letter Collection contains six fascicles of letters titled “Gandok(簡牘),” which have never been made public, and thus, received great attention for its stature as a new resource.
Gandok lists 231 letters received by Taeheo Nambung who played a major role in the establishment of Pyochungsa, and who also led the publishing of Bunchung seonanrok(奮忠紓難錄) [A Record of Arousing Loyalty and Relieving Hardship]. Thanks to Nambung, the achievement and historic service of Great Master Samyeong became well known to Joseon society. Despite this contribution, however, no records are available to give us a glimpse of Nambung’s life, and the academic community’s understanding of him is rudimentary at best.
This paper introduces the content of the six-fascicle Gandok, and looks into its major content. To that end this paper’s Chapter Ⅱ includes explanations about the overall content of Gandok. Chapter Ⅲ concentrates on the life of Nambung, the recipient of these letters. Based on my research, Nambung’s major activities and the nature of the friendships he developed with others can be better understood.
Lastly, Chapter Ⅳ introduces resources related to Great Master Samyeong, which are also found in Gandok, and tries to put in perspective his historic stature in spite of its fragmentary nature. Recently, lively research is being done on how people in the same or latter period of Samyeong’s life perceived him. The content of Gandok should be more actively used in future studies related to Samyeong. I hope this paper will stimulate more research into Nambung, Pyochungsa and Great Master Samyeong in the future.
