본고에서는 대행선사의 법어집 󰡔한마음요전󰡕에 나타난 요의를 크게 두 가지의 밀교적 시각에서 바라보았다. 우선 선사의 법어에는 철저한 스스로의 통찰을 통한 살아있는 법어, 현실적 소재를 통한 실천행의 법어, 대중을 위한 신속한 처방적 법어 등의 특징을 내포하고 있었는데, 이를 통하여 선사의 법어가 함축하고 있는 󰡔대일경󰡕의 삼구법문, 즉 일체지지를 성취하는 원리로서의 삼구의 교설을 엿볼 수 있었고, 선사의 법성 그 자체로서의 ‘주인공’에서 밀교 오지의 하나인 법계체성지를 살펴볼 수 있었다. 밀교의 삼구법문은 “보리심이 원인이 되고, 대비가 근본이 되며, 방편이 구경이 된다.”는 것이다. 대행선사의 법어에는 시종일관 이러한 삼구의 교설이 바탕이 되어 설법되고 있었다. 그리고 밀교의 오지 중 법계체성지는 우주에 편만한 주객 내지 심색 모두가 진여자성임을 말하는 수승한 지혜를 말한다. 즉 청정법신 비로자나여래의 있는 그대로의 양상인 것이다. 선사의 ‘주인공’ 또한 그대로의 부족함이 없는 존재, 본래 성불되어져 있는 존재로서 이는 법계체성지와 다를 바 없는 법성이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 이러한 ‘주인공’은 본체로서 시방삼세가 하나이고, 형상은 무한한 모습으로 나타나며, 작용은 내 마음에 비롯되는 것이라고 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper looks into essential points contained in the collected Dharma talks of Seon Master Daehaeng titled The Principles of One Mind [Hanmaum Yojeon], largely from the two perspectives of Buddhism’s esoteric school. To begin with, Daehaeng’s Dharma talks had three characteristics: words full of life based on her own thorough insight; actionable teachings based on her selection of practical topics; and quick prescriptive words to give people relief from their problems. These three characteristics reflect the three-phrase teachings of the Mahāvairocana Sūtra, which is a teaching given in three phrases to describe the principles to attain omniscience (sarvajñājñāna). In addition, the concept of Juingong, which is the inherent Dharma nature of Seon Master Daehaeng, connotes “Dharmadhatu Wisdom” (dharmadhātu-prakṛti-jñāna), one of the five kinds of wisdom taught in the esoteric school of Buddhism. The three-phrase teaching of the esoteric school is: “Bodhi mind becomes the cause, great compassion the foundation, and skillful means the ultimate.” Seon Master Daehaeng’s Dharma talks were constantly given from the foundation of this three-phrase teaching. And Dharmadhatu Wisdom represents the sublime wisdom that subject (he who perceives) and object (that which is perceived) or mind and form, which permeate the universe, are all the true nature of things as they are. In other words, they represent the pure Dharma body of Vairocana Buddha as it is. The Juingong also lacks nothing as it is, and has inherent Buddhahood, which can also be considered as “Dharma nature” and no different form Dharmadhatu Wisdom. Therefore, this Juingong is the original essence in which the worlds of the “ten directions and three times (past, present, future)” are one; where form manifests in limitless ways, and where function arises from one’s own mind.
