이 글은 묘공대행(1927~2012)의 탄신 100주년을 맞아 전시회를 가정하여 생애와 사상을 재조명한 글이다. 묘공대행은 행적상 여러 가지 난점이 있으므로 연대기적으로 전시회를 구성하는 일반적인 경우와 다르게 묘공대행의 핵심적인 사상과 활동 양상으로 전시 섹션을 구성하였다. 묘공대행이 스스로 본래면목을 깨달았고, 다른 이의 몸과 마음을 치유하기 위해 일대일로 마주하는 법문 형식을 주로 하였다는 점에서 “자성불을 마주하다.”를 전시회의 대주제로 정하고 네 가지 섹션을 구성하였다.
첫째, ‘한마음과 본래성불’ 섹션은 묘공대행을 한국선의 전통 속에 자리매김하는 부분이다. 묘공대행을 대표하는 사상을 본래성불의 입장에서 해석하고 그에 따라 행적과 사상을 설명하고 관련 법어를 드러내는 것이다. 둘째, ‘오공과 보현행’ 섹션은 묘공대행의 실천 교화면을 한국불교의 전통 속에 자리매김하는 부분이다. 묘공대행의 오공의 ‘공共’을 화엄에 기반한 보현행으로 해석한다. 셋째, ‘몸의 과학 마음의 과학’ 섹션은 묘공대행이 시대의 방편으로 과학을 채용했음을 설명하는 부분이다. 넷째, ‘미디어, 소통, 신도’ 섹션은 1980년대부터 본격적으로 미디어를 활용한 묘공대행의 모습을 설명하는 부분이다. 묘공대행이 수많은 사람을 일대일로 대면하는 방식이 바로 영상이거나 지면 등의 미디어이기 때문이다. 이처럼 묘공대행이 신도와 소통하는 방식 덕분에 한마음선원의 신도체계가 굳건하게 유지되는 것으로 평가할 수 있다.
이상과 같이 묘공대행의 생애와 사상을 재조명함으로써 그녀와 한마음선원을 한국불교의 흐름 속에 자리매김하는 동시에, 한마음선원의 소통 양식과 신도체계가 향후 한국불교 미래의 모델이 될 수 있음을 확인하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study sheds light on the life and philosophy of Myogong Daehaeng (1927-2012), on the supposition that a commemorative exhibition will be held in the future to celebrate the 100th anniversary of her birth. Because some parts of Myogong Daehaeng’s life and activities are difficult to understand, I organized sections of this presumed exhibition not in chronological order as is ordinarily done, but according to aspects of her essential philosophy and activities. The umbrella theme of this exhibition should be “Encountering One’s Intrinsic Nature as Buddha,” and it should highlight the fact that she awakened to her true nature on her own; also that she often gave one-on-one Dharma talks to devotees to heal their body and mind. I also organized the presumed exhibition into the following four sections.
The first section, titled “The One Mind and Inherent Buddhahood,” should establish Myogong Daehaeng’s place in the tradition of Korean Seon. It should also interpret her major philosophies from the perspective of the concept of inherent Buddhahood. Then it should explain her activities and philosophies based on this perspective and cite relevant Dharma talks. The second section titled “Five Sharings and Samantabhadra Practice” should establish her edification activities and her application of Buddhism in the tradition of Korean Buddhism. The “sharing” she speaks of is interpreted as Samantabhadra practice and is based on Hwaeom (Avataṃsaka) teachings. The third section titled “Science of Body, Science of Mind” should describe how Myogong Daehaeng adopted science as a skillful mean to teach in the modern era. The fourth section titled “Media, Communication & Devotees” should describe how she made full use of the media beginning in the 1980s. The way Myogong Daehaeng communicated with countless people was through such media as videos or papers/books. Thanks to her use of media, the devotee organization of Hanmaum Seon Center is considered to have a solid foundation.
By illuminating Myogong Daehaeng’s life and philosophy in this way, I was able to confirm her and the Hanmaum Seon Center’s importance in the current of Korean Buddhism, and reconfirm that the communications network and organization of the Hanmaum Seon Center can provide a model for the future of Korean Buddhism.
